Tape echo, memory echo
How the Space Echo maps onto MINERVA
The Roland RE-201 Space Echo records onto a loop of tape and plays it back through several heads a little later; some of the output is fed back onto the tape. MINERVA Space Echo keeps the controls and the feel, but replaces the single loop with a memory of many recordings:
| Space Echo | MINERVA Space Echo |
|---|---|
| One tape loop | Memory: many traces, one per segment |
| Repeat rate (tape speed) | Trace length (1/16 to 4 bars, or 10 ms – 20 s) |
| Playback heads 1–3 and the mode selector | Heads: head 1 is the memory echo; heads 2 and 3 replay what head 1 played 1 or 2 segments earlier, or re-cue memory with head 1’s echo |
| Intensity (feedback) | Feedback: the echo is mixed into what gets recorded next |
| Bass / treble | Feedback Bass / Treble, inside the feedback loop |
| Wow, flutter, saturation, hiss | Wow, Flutter, Tape Drive, Hiss |
| Spring reverb | Spring |
| Tape wear | Forgetting, Tape Dropouts, Wear Tone |
| Changing the repeat rate changes pitch | Length Mismatch = Varispeed (or keep the pitch with Stretch) |
The delay is a special case
With Memory Capacity = 1, Self Match on and no encoding failure, memory holds only the last segment and it always answers: the echo is exactly that segment, one segment later. That is a tape delay with a repeat time of one segment, and the test suite checks it sample for sample. Every other setting departs from the delay in a controlled way:
- More capacity: earlier segments can answer too, weighted by similarity.
- Self Match off: the last segment can’t answer itself; only earlier ones can.
- Lower Activation Power: answers blur together into a prototype.
- Freeze: memory stops changing, like the RE-201’s endless repeat.
Why this is interesting musically
A delay repeats what you just played. A memory echo answers with what you played the last time things sounded like this. Play a chorus again and the first chorus comes back; change style and the echo goes quiet (with Echo Normalization = Familiarity) or reaches for the nearest thing it knows. Clamp a few bars and they become the vocabulary everything else is heard through.
